I’ve been in the moving industry since 2003 and pretty much seen everything. I Want share some tips on do-it-yourself moving that might additionally help you save some cash if you ever have to relocate. You’re not alone. Thousands of people each year move themselves without hiring movers with no problem. But, that’s not saying its an easy task. requires you to pick a method of moving. The earlier you pick your method, the better chances you’ll be able to secure what you need on your move date. Also, the earlier you choose, the better you’ll be able to prepare your home for whichever method of moving you need.

1. Have a moving sale (garage sale)
Everyone needs to declutter and get rid of things from time to time, but it’s even more important before a move. And since you already have to go through every single thing in the house. what better time to sort the trash from the treasures and have a garage sale! It’s a great way to get rid of stuff and make a little extra cash while you’re at it.

  • garage sale
  • Donate Or Get Rid Of Unwanted Items
  • Sell it on Online Classifieds
  • Sell it on Online Marketplaces
  • Sell it on Mobile Marketplaces

The most wonderful part of having a moving sale — less stuff to pack!!!

2. Find boxes and packing materials for free

  • Craigslist
  • Faceboock market place free boxes
  • Freecycle
  • Liquor stores. …
  • Bookstores. …
  • Grocery stores. …
  • McDonald’s. …

Packing material can also be expensive if you think your only option is bubble wrap. Creatively wrap fragile items with things you already have. Kitchen towels, clothing, old bath towels, newspaper, or any other soft material will work well. My mom gave me a huge roll of butcher paper she had in her basement to use when I ran out of newspaper. It worked like a charm, and we burned it in the fireplace at our new home as we unpacked.

- Packing Materials Needed

  • Boxes — Small, Medium, Large, Dishpacks, and Wardrobe Boxes
  • Packing Paper
  • 3–6 Rolls of Packing Tape
  • Mattress Bags
  • Tape Gun
  • Markers

3. Pack yourself or ask for help

Sort out the items to pack. Once you are done with the planning of what to carry, start sorting out the things. Sort one room at a time and keep the items in a common space where you have decided to pack your items. This is important and will help you pack fast else you will yourself forget that where you have kept the sorted things and ultimately you will be in a mess.

You need not waste much time properly folding the casual dresses and instead use nice garbage bags to keep them. As far as the other delicate things are concerned, be careful with those. Use strong boxes and proper cushioning to protect them from breaking during transportation. The tapes used must also be strong so that they do not tear easily.

4:Pack Drawers For Moving

The good news is that many of your drawers don’t have to be packed before you move. In fact, keeping certain drawers full, and inside the dresser saves room in the moving van or truck and means less time unpacking once you’ve moved into your new home.

Keep in mind that not packing drawers for moving allows the contents to move around during the move, which means they’re less protected. Moving contents can also damage the interiors of the drawers. On the other hand, removing items in drawers offers more protection, but that also requires more time, more packing equipment and can result in needing a larger moving truck (more $$).

When to Pack Drawers Before Moving

There are situations where we recommend taking the time to pack the contents of your drawers before you load the truck.

It’s hard to understand the toll moving takes on furniture and furnishings. In addition to the loading and unloading, and the blankets and pads used to cushion things, the act of driving creates continuous vibrations that can disrupt the furniture’s structure, or damage the walls of the drawers.

  • Will you be able to lift and move the furniture piece?

If your loaded dresser is approaching the 200 lb, mark — think twice about leaving the drawer’s contents inside as you may find you can’t load it, unload it, or maneuver it into your new location — especially if you’ll be going upstairs.

  • drawer full of smaller, loose items?

Desk drawers full of small, easily lost items that can shift around quite a bit during the move. To avoid a big mess on your hands once you arrive, it’s better to pack those items securely, so they don’t rattle around, leak, or cause damage to one another.

6: Label, Label, Label

Every box and bag your pack needs to be labeled. Even if you think its an unimportant box, you never know what you might wind up needing right after you get to your new place. Having a clear list or summary of what’s in each box will make your life much easier.

7: Rent a moving truck tips

renting a moving truck and doing it yourself could be your best option. When preparing for your move, it is important to have a well thought out plan and to know how to get the best deal on a moving truck so you can save as much money as possible.

When you take on the task of moving yourself, the last thing that you want is to make multiple trips. If you aren’t sure what size you need, you can talk to the moving truck company to help you determine what size truck you need or you can check out Moving Insider. The number of rooms that you are moving will help determine the size truck you will need to rent.

Most rental truck companies will charge not only a daily rate, but a certain amount per mile. The rates that they charge may fluctuate based on the day of the week and time of the year that you are looking to use the moving truck according to Jtr movers. Most rental trucks are in high demand on the weekends, and business starts to pick up during the summer months. If you can be flexible and arrange to move in the middle of the week, you may be able to get a lower rate.

Even if you are just moving across town, you want to make sure that you are fully protected. While Visa and MasterCard will provide you car insurance if you charge the cost to rent a car, they won’t when you rent a moving truck. If you happen to get into an accident or your belongings get stolen from the rental truck, you are fully liable. Your own home or auto insurance policy may provide you with some coverage, you need to make sure that you don’t need to get supplemental coverage

  • Check the Vehicle Before Signing

Before you sign the rental agreement, you want to make sure that you conduct a thorough walkthrough and carefully inspect the vehicle inside and out. You want to look for existing damage along the exterior, in the cab and bed of the truck, the tires, windshield glass, etc. Make sure you note any and all damage that you see so you won’t be held liable for it when you return the truck.

Choosing to move yourself can save you a ton of money, if you are able to get a great deal on the moving truck. With a little bit of knowledge and the right questions you can get the best deal and make moving day a stress-free event. If you’re ready to make your

8: Strategically pack the moving truck A Step by Step Guide

you need to make sure that you get the most out of the moving truck that you’ve rented.

Tools & Moving Equipment you needed it

  1. Furniture Dolly
  2. Appliance Dolly w/straps
  3. 4 Wheel Dolly
  4. Extra Straps & Tie Downs
  5. Furniture Pads and/or blankets

The heaviest of your items need to be the first to be packed. This will help to maximize the space and keep the rear of the truck from dragging if it becomes too heavy. The items that you want to load first are:

- Appliances: keep these items upright and distribute them along the back wall of the truck. If you are loading a washer and dryer, you should put them on the opposite side of the refrigerator.

- Furniture: large pieces of furniture should be loaded next. This includes sofas, chairs, and entertainment units.

These items will be packed from floor to ceiling and the heaviest items should be loaded on the bottom. You should be packing 2–3 foot tiers with these items and wrapping a strap around each tier to keep the items secure.

  • Move Longer Items Into The Truck

The next items you want to load a truck with are your sofa, headboards, tabletops, box spring and mattress. They should be placed along the longest wall of the truck to keep them upright and to save space. Secure these items with ties. Load a truck with your dressers and desks against your mattress to protect the drawers in case they decide to open, and make sure any item that has drawers is placed with them facing the wall, so they don’t have as much room to open during the move.

  • Go Tetris Style pack you boxes

As you begin loading your boxes into the truck you want to keep things organized. You want to keep boxes that are of the same size and strength together so you can pack them on top of one another. Make sure you place the largest, and heaviest boxes on the bottom of the pile, with the medium boxes in the middle, leaving the lighter, smaller boxes for the top. Try and create even surfaces and move from the back of the truck forward.

You want to have the truck packed as tightly as possible. Place any unwieldy and fragile items on the top to avoid them getting crushed.

You have to be able to find a place to put all of your personal belongings without having to make more than one trip. Most companies that rent out moving trucks are able to help you choose the right sized truck for your needs, but you have to load the truck correctly in order for it to work. To help make your move as seamless and stress free

9: items that you may want to keep out of the back of the moving truck

  • Flammable Material
  • Your Pet’s toys and food
  • Medications
  • Weapons
  • Important Paperwork
  • Perishable Foods
  • Money and coins
